The other day I went out to see what I could do for our car (slight altercation between the passenger side rear bumper and a bollard, it's not bad but to me it's awful), but anyway as I was leaving the house I saw a VW camper, nothing new here though then I noticed the big plastic square grille where the chrome VW badge usually goes and then I noticed the licence plate 'WX14—-', then I thought christ, it's a unicorn (to me anyway) a brand new VW T2 camper literally right outside my door. I asked the owner if I could take a couple of pictures and she was fine but was in a hurry and said none of the inside.
Was in need of a wash to be honest (which I happily volunteered anytime she wanted it doing).
Seems she had always wanted one and when she heard they were stopping making them, she bit the bullet and bought one. Starting price for one of these £40,000 of Her Majesty's pounds (USD$60,600). It's still a 1,400cc engine that tops out at 70mph (the owner said 'and you feel it', 'you feel every mph') Lol.
The only thing to make these road legal in the U.K. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ a fog light on the rear. Oh how I love my country.
So what do you do if you want one of these? Well you log on to danburymotorcaravans.com.
http://www.danburymotorcaravans.com/
Where you can even configure your desirable T2 or T5.
(I haven't looked through all the configurator yet but looks to be quite good from first impressions).
Looking at the customer gallery it seems over the last four years quite a lot of T2s have been sold so hopefully the prices for used ones should be quite low in the future.

60,000 dollars? ...who is that insane? O.o I've spent maybe 6k on my Beetle..maybe...and it has a new motor in it, bigger then the one in this bus...

Sorry, I know how that feels, is it too noticeable? :(
I faintly remember watching a show about people taking their driving tests (or mock driving tests) and having to live and learn in one of these camper thingies.

Well, most of that cost was the camper conversion, the Kombi itself probably wasn't too bad.

I don't think it's an insane price at all. Used VW T2s from Australia and America are around £20,000 ($30,000) for a really good one but these are brand new made to you own requirements sure they have slight differences here and there over the years but £40,000 for a brand new one is pretty good. Lets be honest these will be staying with their owners for some years so knowing that there is no usual issues that come with buying a used vehicle (namely how has it been treated, has it been maintained properly, has it been in a crash, has it been converted to each individuals requirements along the way and done it any harm, etc...) so for that, it's worth every penny.

To me it's horrendous but to many it's 'okay, what am I looking at here? Where is the damage?'. One of the rear parking sensors on the passenger side didn't pick up the low metal bollard. But the weather isn't good to do a full repair just yet so I tidied it up and will correct it when time and weather improves.
Ye', my step-father had one of these and he used to go for a drive and park up in a layby, put the kettle on and do some study work for university. When he Lived in London he and his wife at the time along with their baby son would drive through the night up to Cumbria. The wife and son sleeping in the back and just the occasional stop for fuel and toilet break.

Must just be the country then, you can build a new one from the ground up for cheaper here in America if you really wanted, the parts are cheap. Even new parts, which aren't as good as oem though usually, hope the new bus's are as good as the old ones, lol

I could see the camper bits costing a bit, yeah, 60k still seems steep though

I had a quick glance inside and it looks well built and thought out with good quality furnishings as for the vehicle itself, I'd imagine it would be well built or they wouldn't of been building them so long and sold so many from Danbury's alone.

I'd imagine it's pretty well put together, the materials would be the only thing I'd question but seeing as it's from the factory, I'm sure they're fine. My driver side mirror on mine is still fine, but the passenger side being new, and non oem, is already rusting

The only real let down for me is knowing the wheel carrier on the front is a dummy. If you want a spare wheel and carrier it goes on the back like in the second picture. The white over orange one with the wheel carrier looks good but as I say, when you see in the options it's a cost option and a dummy.

Wonder why they'd make it a dummy.. weight distribution would be a bit better with a full spare in front

I really don't know. It's a £599 option on the T2 Classic and £0 option on the SE.

and then I noticed the licence plate 'WX14—-',
As a Canadian, I'm curious as to what the license plate has to do with anything. Does the "14"mean that it was first registered in 2014?
And, holy shit, £40,000 = $75,282 CAD. The most expensive new VW I can build is a'15 Touareg TDI Execline R-Line for $68,575.00.
$75 grand will buy a loaded C7 Corvette.

Ye', the important part (for me anyway) was the '14' as yes it means it was registered here in 2014, the first two letters say where it was registered (in this case Bristol).
It is quite expensive but considering this would be one of the last ones made and that although it's more expensive than a used one, you know it's history which over a 20 year old one that you have no real guarantee of how it's been treated is great piece of mind.
